We have chosen to support the Catharinafonds foundation, a relatively small scale initiative aimed to improve education in the Namanga region in southern Kenya. They improve education on 7 schools, providing funds for teacher salaries, education materials and the building of extra classrooms. More complete information is provided at www.catharinafonds.nl

Our reasons to support this organization are their dedication to improve education and the fact that it’s a small organization. The latter means nearly all funds are actually sent to Kenya since the Dutch part of the foundation is run by volunteers. It also means whatever little funds we are able to raise will actually have a bit of impact. Finally, the chairman happens to live down our street…

Of course, everyone is invited to donate a gift at 9318026 t.n.v. Stichting Catharinafonds Nijmegen, but we also figured a way to raise funds in a more original way:

The ‘poule voor het goede doel’

Basically the idea is this:

Donate a minimum of 10 euros to 6195078 t.n.v. DR Speth te Nijmegen and send an email to daanandchrisdoafrica@gmail.com with a prediction how long Daan and Chris will manage to stay on the road (in days), and what country they'll end their journey in). The best prediction wins a small present (probably a good bottle of whisky, or a local beverage from the country we crashed in) and a honourable notation on this site. Of course the rest of the money goes to the Catharinafonds

Now you might have some questions after reading this, so we tried to answer some beforehand. Any remaining questions can be sent to our africamail.

- How did you get this crazy idea?

A lot of Daan’s friends doubt the fact that he’ll manage to ride through Africa and back in a year. Most of them think the adventure will end somewhere on the road down (or up) through Africa, while those of littlest fate think we won’t even make Africa. (I have heard someone bet we’d end up in Moscow…) We decided to make a little bet out of it 

- Why do we sent money to your own bank account? Is this a sneaky trick to fund your trip?

Nope, but it’s good to do the administration of our poule ourselves. Plus we wouldn’t want to tire the Catharinafonds administration with countless transactions of 10 euros

- Why a minimum of 10 euro’s?

Hey, it’s for charity! Send all you can miss! The 10 euro minimum is only a way to keep the poule a bit fair. We assure you that the winner will get more out of it than the 10 euro he/she put in.

- How far do YOU think you’ll get?

Good point! Since we haven’t got a clue either we’ll also enter the poule with a bet on Holland in 400 days (nearly 14 months). That should be enough to get down and back…

Oh, if only I had the balls. I'd set the bikes on fire, collect the insurance money, place my bet at 0 km's and sit back with a nice bottle of whisky. But luckily arson isn't realy my thing, so I'll place my bet on Holland in 360 days. ~Christiaan
